I want to access the internet while I'm not in the office/home. I already have access by phone, of course, but I want to use certain softwares that I cant from the mobile, and will work only on laptop.

Whats the best option to go about this?

Find out how you can use your mobile phone as a modem for your laptop, to connect to the internet wirelessly. I don't know how expensive it can get in Dubai (data packages via Etisalat are still insanely priced, I think), but people here use their Verizon cards all the time. Ofcourse, if you choose this route, you would also require a compact, light laptop to help with portability.

I'm sure Sammy can better advise other options or specifics.

The thing is, I might want to use it in places like parking lots and such, which might not have wireless network around.

And "your laptop"? I've never had a laptop before! This is the first time, it seems like a reasonable requirement for me.

Sure. And perhaps that promotion has something to do with it too. Money corrupts!

Welcome aboard, capitalist.

It has nothing to do with the promotion. I want to start trading stocks. I need to be rich so I can stop working

I had an IBM T43, with a bluetooth connection, and used  my Nokia 6230 as a modem to connect o the Internet. It's fairly simple, I subscribed to the GPRS service from Etisalat, and enabled Bluetooth on both devices, and using Nokia's Pc Suite, configured the GPRS access settings, so that whenever required, the laptop could simply 'dial-in' to the 'net using my cellphone as a modem.

I once got a bill of AED 2000...but that was because I was in a really remote location, using VPN to connect to my office network, and working on the backup at odd hours using Terminal Services, and this happened really often, so they paid for it Cheesy

hehe...well...india has a bucket load of ppl connecting of 3g modems! you could actually get one of those here, slip in a sim card and have it working! i think Etisalat already has something similar on offer, albeit a PCMCIA card (meaning u need to have one of those bigger slits on the lappy) (provided you cant use your 3g handset instead)

the older GPRS was tooo slow....i had better luck with 56k Tongue how'd you manage ozzy!

Ps: Mad, what cell phone do u have ? and what laptop?

you could easily hook up the jam for the net bit.
Do you have data services enabled on the jam?
Try to connect it to your pc via bluetooth and setup a dial up account using the jam as a modem and dial out *09# i think .
that should put u on the default net connection on your jam.

Ill confirm if the numbers correct. had it somewhere here....umm(searchin)
