Stoner comedies can be a lot of fun. To me, “Dude, Where’s My Car” is the Surreal Stoner Comedy and “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” is my Smart Stoner Comedy. From now on, “Smiley Face” will be my Adorable Stoner Comedy.

Because the movie follows Anna Faris and her stoned out adventures, which is unique in itself, since most stoner comedies follow guy’s, not girls. In “Smiley Face”, it is a lot of fun watching Anna Faris as the stoned out girl, because she is very adorable.

And the movie is full of recognizable faces, such as that guy from “That 70’s Shows”, that other guy from “Harold and Kumar”, and one guy from “The Sara Silverman Show” and so on. It is like every side character is from a likable comedy show. There’s even Jim from “The Office”.

It doesn’t end very funny though. You don’t end a stoner comedy with the girl doing community service! Come on!

Araki is one of my favorite directors! He is one of the few real 'auteurs' working in the so-called American Independent cinema right now.

Besides "Mysterious Skin," try and get your hands on "Splendor" and "Totally Fucked Up."

Here's a description of said movies, to get you interested:

Splendor
An average, calm mid-20s girl named Veronica restarts her dead dating life all of the sudden, but with two guys: a sensitive failed writer named Abel and an airheaded drummer named Zed. At first she despairs. Then she finds a way to date both without their finding out. Then she tells both about it. Then Abel and Zed meet each other, and, after much initial conflict, they wind up living together and evolve into a very odd yet happy threesome.

Totally Fucked Up
Gay angst teen...(It planted the seeds for what became -- a better, more mature work -- "Mysterious Skin.")

Anna Faris is a funny actress. But I didnt find this movie funny. Maybe you have to be stoned to see what Anna really go through. I just didnt laugh at any of the scenes.
