Jericho
CBS

Today is the last ordinary day.

A nuclear holocaust as just taken place and the residents of a rural Kansas town named Jericho are among the few who survived. Set in this post apocalyptic America, the towns 5,000 residents must deal with civil unrest, looting, escaped convicts, limited resources and other threats. The shows main protagonist is the mayor's son, Jake Green played by Skeet Ulrich (from Scream), a man with a questionable past who returns to Jericho the day of the disaster after being gone for five years. Other characters include his ex-flame Emily (played by the super hot Ashley Scott), hottie elementary school teacher Heather (played by Six Feet Under's Sprague Grayden) and Robert Hawkins, another character with a mysterious past who might have more knowledge about the cause of the attack than anyone else.

Although canceled after its first season, Jericho will be returning for a 7 episode mid-season special in 2008 thanks to a 110,000 signatures petition signed by fans and approximately 20 tons of nuts that were sent to CBS headquarters.

I wish HBO listened to its viewers like CBS did. (With the top exec at HBO fired recently, I think chances of "Carnivale" returning to complete its arc just got better!)

Capt, your thoughts on the show. Is it worth getting into? Your description certainly makes it sound appealing.

As much as I am an optimist, I highly doubt that ever happening. At $4,000,000 per episode, Carnivale was just plain too expensive for its own good. What do we love about Carnivale? The shows rich organic attention to detail. The shows production team created a visually striking period piece of such immense detail which even most Hollywood films set in the same era avoid. This is what sets it apart from all other fantasy shows on television. Watching Carnivale was like the purest form of escapism. It was almost as if you could turn your head in any direction see aspects of the story in real life. You could literally feel the dust between your teeth.

As with several TV shows on free-to-air American networks, this show has a great concept but it fails in its low (low!) production value. I understand not every TV network is HBO, but still, I'm sure more can be done to improve the quality to these shows within their tight budgets. For example, in Jericho, in some scenes if they just avoided using constant, non-stop, irritating McGyver-style background music, it would make the show so much better! Watch any episode of Six Feet Under to see how silence sometimes adds a more dramatic effect than a lousy score. Plus, when you want to do sci-fi, you better have big bucks 'cos visual effects on a shoe string budget look fake and sometimes just plain stupid.

AK, let me finish at least 10 episodes and I'll let you know if its worth getting into.

Speaking of expensive TV shows AK, I think HBO's ROME still holds the title of being the most expensive television show in history with Season One cost approximately $100,000,000. AK, if you haven't watched it yet, I suggest you drop what you're doing and f***ing watch it already! Richly detailed, organic (you can smell the pig shit on the streets of Rome!) and immensely satisfying. Highly recommended!

I tried ROME (3 episodes) but gave up on grounds of shallowness. The dialogue was written on the nose, and the gore and nudity had a tangy, gratuitousness to it. I'll admit this period in history was about decadence and freewheeling fucked-up-ness, but the show reeked of fake, put-on edginess. It seemed to be more in love with the *idea* of what life in Rome was back then, than anything else. I'm frankly surprised it lasted 2 seasons, given the high production cost.

But I can agree with you on the rich production detail; the little I saw was fantastic.

Five episodes in and so far so good. Once you get past the shows low production value and some of the stereo-type characters that just have to exist in the prime time TV world, the show is quite good. Episode 5 ended with a dramatic (and completely silent! Yes!) shot of ICBM's cruising across the sky above Jericho. Looking forward to watching at least 6 more episodes this weekend.
