It is an excellent film, one of the best films I have seen in years. I think that everyone should try to see it. I just hope that this film gets more attention internationally so a wide audience can see it. It is breathtaking and so beautiful.

Other very good ones:
Hamama - Emirati Documentation. Very nice shots and loved it until the end!

Zelal - Egyptian Documentation. Very well and breath taking. And it's a shocking truths as well!

As one of the audience of this film, I was struck by how cartoonish was the depicting of the family and the community in this film. It meandered too in trying to hit home its agenda.
We are not saying such things doesn’t happen, because denying them is not realistic, but the way the plot tried to convince us that everybody has turned on that poor woman for no fault of her, and that even her own mother can’t muster the courage, nay the will, to stand up for her own daughter is just not logical. I mean they keep repeating that she dishonored them, but even within the logic of that particular group, they failed to make the case for that, or explain how. Also as why would Umay, who called the police to free herself and her child in the beginning, why after burning her bridges, would go back over and over for more abuse and risking losing the child that she’d fought too hard to keep. The film has one goal and one goal only, demonizing the community, and saying “see how wonderful everything would be if you just fully embrace your new culture and become like us, and if not you will be merely carton villains”. It felt like the filmmaker has this message she wanted get through, and she went out of her way to ensure that the western audience would respond too, which is funny, because she was preaching to the quire by doing that.
Then comes the ending, the filmmakers has to kick us on the balls, take a piss, and a dump too on us, while we are on the ground eating dirt, as if not abusing us with that misery fist for an hour and a half was not good enough. I mean was that really necessary? What was that all about, killing the innocence? That was gone long ago, we got it alright.
The way I see it, the film one thing that was incredible was Sibel Kekilli portrayal of Umay, she was amazing. Understated and extremely subtle in everything she does. She played the battered yet resolute lioness as good as it gets. Too bad the rest of the film didn’t live up to that.

Ralph,

Thanks for reading. I wish you had commented on the merits (or lack thereof, such as in my case) of this film and had not gotten personal, asking me to "look at myself". I don't need to, but thanks for the advice. As for audience appreciation, since when has the general audience been considered a barometer of a films credibility? Most who attended the screening with me were left equally flabbergasted by the many questionable plot mechanations. I guess its a cultural thing, but I still stand by what I said.
